A
symposium can be defined as a meeting, a forum that contains by its
very nature, difference. To arrive here in Chevigny, was to arrive
somewhere unknown to
me before now. To speak a language I had learnt growing up in Canada
and to stumble and find my way in late night conversations, was to
make me aware of the differences I contain within myself.
On arrival I had to find a way to belong ; « to notice what you notice » as
Alan Ginsberg has said, is a way to observe, to make connections.
And I found for myself the story of predator and prey - the one who hides and
the other who seeks and I saw this story played out in the countryside here -
the fox and the wily hare that showed itself to me and I saw how this story
is played out in myself and in those around me, in those I meet still.
My installation using drawing, paprer and light tried to speak of these things
to make reference to something that now feels very, very familiar. D.C.
