My works are characterized by « immiscibility ». I am interested in creating the patterns and textures through discordant interactions (and expulsions) of two or more immiscible substances, such as oil and water, or the air and oil.

Although governed by the gravitational law and by physical and chemical properties of the painting media, the palette, patterns, and textures created by the immiscibility of substances are totally unanticipated. This unpredictable quality allows freedom from the obligation of seeing with « the eyes and intentions of the painters ».  For example, You will relate the colors, patterns, and textures of some paintings to the networks of rivers and ridges of the Earth as viewed from space. These surface features are also created by interactions of disparate substances. Some of the fractal patterns created by the peeling paints  are reminiscent of the ice sheets on Europa, a moon around Jupiter. Or, reactions of oil paint and air in some of  works may remind another of the cracks and wrinkles created by interactions of air and human body cells. Thus, when we view these works, we can move beyond conventional subject matter and literal frames.  K.W.
